The rehabilitation of the park, designed by the pioneer of the Hungarian landscape architecture, Béla Rerrich, and the project aiming at strengthening its community use was carried out within the framework of a municipal investment. The renovation of the park and the creation of a new pavilion building represent an exemplary solution for the reconstruction of modern public green areas in the city. In addition to the construction, the community aspects of the project, as well as cooperation with residents and end users were an equally important part of the renovation.
The roads running in the axis of the northern part of the park, the neighboring school and the Reformed Church are organically linked to the southern part of the area designed with contemporary architectural tools. The unity of the park and its environment was enhanced by aligning the pedestrian traffic system of the park to the traffic of the surrounding streets. The harmony of historical background and contemporary architecture characterizes the whole project. The thoughtful planning allowed for the preservation of all the trees in the park, even though its structure and routes changed significantly, and its active green areas increased considerably. A well-proportioned, friendly space with trees and meadows provides the community core of the spatial system. An additional value is the appearance of Béla Kondor’s unique motifs in the paving and on the street furniture, enhancing local binding.
The new service pavilion is located next to the main pedestrian walkway, at the southeast entrance of the park. The delicate design of the building, the contour of which follows the curve of the road, gives the mass a tent-like stretched and floating appearance. The pavilion opens to the public plaza with large glass surfaces, while turns to the surrounding streets with solid surfaces of dark brown cladding. A semi-open gateway between the two spaces creates an exciting visual connection. The functionality of the new pavilion building is excellent: it offers a wide range of opportunities for an active community life. Its generously combined mass includes four functions that can be operated independently.
