The process of realizing the new building of the Semmelweis University, Faculty of Health Sciences along the first-prize plan of a national, open, anonymous architectural design competition is exemplary. The designers created a clean and solid architectural concept that could be built almost without any changes.

All of this was complemented by the Semmelweis University's exemplary attitude as a client, facilitating the realization of the plan, and supporting the conduction of the design competition. The new wing erected on the narrow vacant lot of Szentkirályi utca 12. is woven almost imperceptibly into the layers of the existing building complex by means of the rational design method, the academic world organized around the inner atrium, the circulation system, and the way of being connected to the inner courtyard of the block. At the same time, the defining presence of the community dimension traceable throughout the building provides completely new perspectives. To meet the needs being dominant from the middle of the twentieth century, a large proportion of venues for informal educational activities based on communication and teamwork are also added to rooms with bound functions, i.e. lecturers and laboratories. In the extremely tight situation, the architects made use of a wide range of transitions between public and private, exterior, and interior, lower and upper spaces to create a coherent spatial structure where the intermediate spaces became bright, living community halls. With its implementation process, the way of dealing with the urban context, and creating up-to-date educational spaces, the building sets an example for both architects and clients.
